Photo Dynamic Therapy (PDT)

Photo Dynamic Therapy (PDT) is a treatment performed with a topical photosensitizing agent called Levulan.  Levulan is a naturally occurring photosensitizing compound which has been approved by the FDA to treat pre-cancerous skin lesions called actinic keratoses.  Levulan  (5 aminolevulinic acid or ALA) is applied to the skin, allowed to penetrate for several hours and then activated with the correct wave length of light.

The Levulan is preferentially absorbed by abnormal tissues so the treatments remove sun damaged precancerous spots called Actinic Keratoses (AK’s).  Treatments also improve sun-damaged skin such as sebaceous hyperplasia, fine lines, darker pigmented spots and rough skin. scars.

Photo Dynamic Therapy has the unique ability to minimize pores and reduces the production of sebum from the sebaceous glands so it is also very effective in treating acne, acne rosacea, and improving acne scars.
